Mediator

A mediator has many roles in today's society. There are many uses for the skills that a mediator employs every day. From divorce to marriage, from the work place to individuals’ personal lives, a mediator is there to provide a valuable service by diffusing conflict before it can escalate, causing irreparable damage.

A mediator doesn't have to be certified, trained by any national institute or hold other credentials in most cases, though formal training does have many vital benefits. Training gives individuals the tools needed to settle disputes through conversation and logic. Advanced training is also available for this profession. A mediator must be a multifaceted individual, capable of seeing both sides in an argument. Those opposing viewpoints are what must be brought together if the conflict is to be resolved.

A mediator is an individual who is brought in as a third party to help settle an argument or conflict without resorting to court action. Court costs and lawyer fees are much higher than the rates that a mediator will offer, making this a sound financial decision for all parties involved. The mediator will listen to both sides of an argument and attempt to persuade each party to see at least part of the other's point of view. This is especially important in divorce counseling, where the arguments can be extremely bitter and illogical. The mediator must find a way past any hurt and pain and speak to the logical, understanding human being beneath.

The use of a mediator by those embroiled in conflict is an age-old tradition. The ancient Irish actually had mediators that could command large sums of money and great respect for their skills. A mediator today must be able to meet the demands of many different industries and individuals, from corporate conflict to personal matters.
